Sanzin

Class: Rogue
Race: Halfling
Player: Trav

Sanzin Burrows never understood why he was so small compared to his parents and his two brothers and one sister. He would find out once he was older that he was adopted, his parents never told him of course, but what he lacked in size he made up for in wit.

Sanzin always played with his siblings and due to his size was quite good at playing hide and seek, and even getting into small spaces the other children could not. He used it innocently at first but would soon realize the true potential of his gift.

Sanzin’s adopted family, being of ample size (pun intended) lived a quite limited, and poor lifestyle. Sanzin, along with his brothers and sister never went hungry, however the same cannot be said for his hard working father and sometimes even his mother. Sanzin, feeling that he owed everything he had to his adopted family took up a life of petty crime. It started out innocently enough. First, blending into crowds and pick-pocketing civilians, using sleight of hand to do cheap tricks to impress drunks as he robbed them face to face at local inns and taverns, and sneaking into farms overnight and snatching anything he could feed his family with. Usually just plucking carrots or corn from the fields.

Sanzin never intended to let it get to the point it did. Part of it was wanting to see how far he could push his skills, another part feeling like his family deserved more, but mostly, and worst of all, it was greed. Straight from the farms to the slums, Sanzin was a full on thief. He found a way into the thieves guild and quickly realized that he wasn’t stealing for necessity anymore, he was stealing for himself. Once you are part of the criminal guild you start taking on jobs to help other thieves and become rich together. Sanzin always seemed to want more.

One night what started out as a simple caravan heist turned into so much more. After robbing the caravan and getting off seemingly easily, Sanzin saw what appeared to be some sort of artifact, could have been a rare one, Sanzin didn’t know, but he was intrigued. Something about its glow, the amulet of a face he did not recognize, with the beautiful ruby eyes that glistened in the moonlight. Sanzin knew he had to bring all findings back to the guild and split them up evenly, but for whatever reason he decided to pocket it.

When the thieves returned to the guild they were told to dump the haul. Obviously, Sanzin did not drop his amulet, but like some sort of magical force pulled them together, the king-pin looked right at Sanzin and yelled;

“You, half man. Come.”

Terrified, Sanzin approached, hand in pocket, holding the amulet. Feeling its power.

“Empty your pockets.” The leader said.

Sanzin tried to use his slight of hand to hide the amulet, but those tricks do not go past the eye of a thief, let alone the head of the operation. The man grabbed Sanzin’s wrist with such power that his hand opened easily, being half the size of the man might have had something to do with it. As his hand opened the amulet dropped. The man picked it up. And he looked behind Sanzin and snapped his fingers.

Blackness

Sanzin awakes in his home town in a gutter. He decides to go straight home and try to tend to his head wound. He goes home and nobody is home. There is still food on the table, and the fireplace still has a small kindle going. Sanzin quickly realized what has happened. He still has no idea what had happened to his adopted family, he is hoping they just left, or were forced to leave their home. Sadly those are better than the alternatives. Either they were kidnapped and sold, or dead. Out of those options he prayed for death.

Sanzin turned away from his life of crime. He stayed in his hometown and became a magician. Using his skills to impress kids, and parents alike. It’s not a great living but it puts food on the table in an honest way. It’s not a good living, but it’s a living. Not even a month into his new, tame lifestyle, Sanzin received a letter from an old friend; Gundren Rockseeker. This is where Sanzin’s story begins…
